Modern Dance kids

What is modern dance?

Born in the early 20th century, modern dance is a dance style that focuses on a dancer’s own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Modern dancers favor movements derived from the expression of their feelings.

Turning against the structured techniques dancers favored a more relaxed, freestyle form of dancing. For example, modern dance pioneers often danced in bare feet and revealing costumes.

What is Contemporary dance?

Contemporary dance tends to combine the strong and controlled legwork of ballet with modern dance’s stress on the torso, and also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.

What is Jazz dance?

The steps and essential style of jazz dancing, originated from dances of Africans brought to the Americas as slaves. Originally, the term jazz dance encompassed any dance done to jazz music, including both tap dance and jitterbug as well as theatrical dance performed on stage by professionals.
